Visitors to Calgary, Alberta have lots of choice in hotels, motels, B&Bs and longer-term executive suites. In the northwest quadrant of the city near McMahon Stadium, Motel Village offers a selection of accommodation. These range from 3-star hotels down.
The Trans-Canada Highway is called 16th Avenue North within the city limits. Motel Village is on the north side of 16th Avenue NW ("N" means north of the Bow River, "W" means west of Centre Street) between Banff Trail and Crowchild Trail. It can be reached by car from 16th Avenue NW - westbound - by taking the Banff Trail turnoff to the north. Heading into Calgary (going east) on 16th Avenue NW, turn left at the Banff Trail stoplights.
For drivers going north on Crowchild Trail, there are two entrances on the east side of Crowchild. Make a right turn at the first one or go as far as the traffic light across from McMahon Stadium and turn right there.
Heading south on Crowchild Trail, turn right at the traffic lights at the pedestrian overpass to McMahon Stadium.
By Calgary Transit, use the C-Train (Calgary's above ground light rail transit) and get off at the McMahon Stadium. This stop is located at the north end of Motel Village.
Motel Village is close (by car) to Foothills Hospital, the University of Calgary, and just a short walk to McMahon Stadium. Football fans will find this very convenient for a CFL Calgary Stampeders game.
There are several restaurants in Motel Village, including some in the individual hotels. Nick's is a popular steak house at the north end, with a well-deserved reputation for good food. Joey's Only is a seafood chain with decent fish and chips. Phil's does a good pancake breakfast. These are just a few of the choices. Take-out food is also available from many restaurants in Calgary, including Nick's.
To get downtown, it's a short drive, but the C-Train is a very convenient and economical option. Parking in downtown Calgary can be expensive and sometimes hard to find, especially on weekdays. The C-Train is crowded during rush hour (especially from about 7 to 8 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.), but generally pleasant at off-peak times.
There are brand-name hotels and a few independents to choose from. One of the largest hotels is the Quality Inn University, with an indoor swimming pool, restaurants, business centre and other amenities. This is also one of the best-rated properties in Motel Village.
The Best Western Village Park Inn is popular and also one of the larger hotels here. Comfort Inn Motel, Econo Lodge, Hampton Inn and Suites, Ramada, Super 8, and Royal Wayne Motor Inn (a well-established economy class independent hotel) are some of the other names to look for.
Overall, Motel Village is a good location for Calgary visitors, especially those who do not need to stay downtown but would like easy access to the city centre. Visitors who want to spend more time south of the central business district may find it more convenient to stay elsewhere in Calgary.
