Koreana BBQ is a new restaurant in the Calgary international food scene, bringing a taste of Korea to the prairies.

Opened just a few months ago, Koreana BBQ on MacLeod Trail South already seems like a veteran establishment. The service is fast, the staff are helpful and friendly and the food comes quickly. Obviously the previous restaurant experience of owner Susan Ahn has made a huge impact on the food, fashion and function of this new eatery.

Stepping Inside

The interior of Koreana BBQ is beautifully designed with bamboo floors, bright colors, traditional decorations, and an assortment of tables including several with built in grills and overhead exhaust hoods as well as private rooms. The mix of modern style and classical adornments creates a comfortable environment for those well versed in customary Korean meals and the adventurous diner looking to try something new and exciting.

What’s for Dinner

The menu encompasses a variety of popular Korean dishes from meat that diners grill themselves, to savory pancakes, hot soups, noodles, and of course a plethora of side dishes including kimchi. There are several varieties of beef and pork cuts to cook on the tabletop grills. Many of the meats are traditionally marinated in sweet and tangy sauces and there are an abundance of dips. There is an array of spicy or subtly flavored dishes to suite anyone’s taste buds. The quality of the ingredients is evident in every bite: crisp vegetables, tender meats, fresh seafood, and fiery kimchi. The meals satisfy every facet of taste and are extremely filling.

The memorable meal can be had with some traditional libations as well. The restaurant carries the staple drink of Korea, soju (an alcoholic beverage generally distilled from rice or potato). Patrons who have never tried the liquor before should beware as imbibing too much may cause a nasty headache. As a sweet treat after the meal shikhae, a fermented rice drink, soothes a full stomach.

With so many options dinner combinations are seemingly endless. Though meals in Korea are generally eaten quickly the menu and atmosphere at Koreana BBQ can make for a long evening of fun and experimentation. The cooking at the table experience will inspire the entire dinner party to be chefs and have everyone lending a helping hand to create a delicious meal.
