Since 1997, the Calgary Zoo has been lit up with outdoor Christmas lights at the beginning of winter. This annual family fun event is an excellent way to get outside for some night magic at the zoo.
In 2007, Zoolights runs from November 30 through January 5, 2008. Visitors come to the zoo in the evening and explore the grounds in the dark. Over two million twinkling lights make the shapes of animals, birds, Christmas figures, enchanted trees, and much more.
The main attractions at Zoolights are the lights and the activities. Some of the animals may be seen, but many of them will be in bed resting. The Zoolights area covers a large part of the zoo grounds, but not all of it.
For Zoo members with the Discovery Passport, admission is free. Otherwise the cost is
To avoid line-ups at the gate, tickets are also available online from the zoo, or in person at Calgary Co-op stores.
The Calgary Zoo closes at 5:30 p.m. and then re-opens for Zoolights from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. (last admission at 8:30 p.m.). The zoo is closed on Christmas Day. On New Year's Eve, there is a special event that is not included in the Zoolights admission.
It's pleasant to walk around viewing the lights and seeing the zoo from a different perspective. For younger children who usually don't get to stay up late and go out after dark, Zoolights is thrilling. There are some brightly-lit areas where even the most timid can feel quite secure.
The concession stand is open for hot chocolate, there are ice sculptures and usually a maze to explore. Carol singers stroll by from time to time.
Generally the children have fun running free in the open areas and naming all the different birds and animals they see outlined in lights.
Adults find Zoolights an easy family outing that leaves everyone feeling better for having had a little fresh air. It helps to know that the kids are usually ready to get straight to bed when they get home.
